Spring Accelerates

Looking for more evidence that spring is here? Look at the stars and planets.

Looking for more evidence that Spring is here? Look at the stars and planets. The bright planet Venus appears low in the southwestern sky about an hour after sunset. For much of this month, Venus resides in the winter constellation Taurus, the Bull. Taurus is now in the western sky at dusk. What a significant difference from just two months ago. Taurus is now on the way out of our sky. The constellation is sinking in the western sky, slipping into the light of twilight.

Take a careful look at Venus, and note Venus is near the Pleiades, a favorite winter star cluster. With binoculars the Pleiades gets even more intriguing, as the faint stars shine amid the glow of dusk.

The winter constellation Orion is also visible early in the evening. Orion is in the western sky, soon to set as night unfolds. Orion too is on the way out, slipping off stage.
