Lovely view over Lagoon Pond, but you've got to be in Hawaii this week to see the lunar eclipse.

Daffodil Moon

Saturday night's full moon, the Daffodil Moon, appears in the zodiacal constellation Virgo. It rises early in the evening, just as the sun sets.

There is a lunar eclipse Saturday morning, but no one on the Vineyard, or along the East Coast will see it. The sun pops up in the eastern sky at dawn, just as the full moon sets. At that moment, the moon is entering the Earth’s shadow. The eclipse will be partially observable out on the West Coast. Those living in Hawaii will have the best show, a complete show, from beginning to end.

Why a great show in Hawaii and not Martha’s Vineyard? It will be nighttime for those living in the Pacific Ocean and the moon will be visible above the horizon, when the eclipse takes place.

Sunday night, the one-day-old full moon rises an hour after sunset. It is near the bright star Spica, the brightest star in Virgo.
