Perfect Weather for Poetry

It’s snowy, cold and still getting dark early. Not great for a trip to the beach, but perfect weather for poetry.

It’s snowy, cold and still getting dark early. Not great for a trip to the beach, but perfect weather for poetry. On Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse will hold a Poetry Cafe, hosted by the Island’s poet laureate, Arnie Reisman, and featuring poets Rose Styron, Brooks Robards and Annette Sandrock.

Admission includes a beverage and a slice of pie.

Also, the West Tisbury Public Library is hosting a series of Monday evening poetry discussions from 4:30 to 6 p.m., beginning on Feb. 23. The discussions will be led by Jill Jupen. Stephen Dobyns is the first poet to be put under the microscope. Subsequent poets to be discussed include Thomas Lux, Hayden Carruth, Mary Oliver, Dobby Gibson and Tony Hoagland.

Participants will be invited to read the work of that week’s featured poet and then write poetry of their own. All levels are welcome. The series is free and open to the public. No sign-up is required.
