A prolonged effort to secure Comcast cable service for Chappaquiddick residents has finally met success.
As soon as the media company receives a final payment, they will prepare to install cable infrastructure on the remote island, spokesman Marc Goodman said in a telephone call to the Gazette Thursday.
“It’s a done deal,” town administrator Pam Dolby confirmed. “They are going to do it.”
The cable service will enable access to community television and high-speed internet.
“Everybody who has been working on this is very pleased with the way this has gone and we think it’s really going to help with property values, and getting families with kids in school on high speed internet service,” said Roger Becker, president of the Chappaquiddick Island Association, which has been working on the project for six years.
Under a long-negotiated agreement, Comcast agreed last year to provide cable service to Chappaquididdick through an underwater utility conduit.
The contract gives Comcast 16 months to set up the cable infrastructure but it’s not yet clear whether they will take advantage of all that time.
“We are hoping that it will happen quickly,” Mr. Becker said. Mr. Goodman, the Comcast spokesman, did not provide further specifics on the timeline or the work required to coordinate the service.
The success of the company’s arrangement with the town hinged on the number of Chappaquiddick residents who would sign up for the service and commit to paying a portion of the infrastructure costs. The memorandum between the town and Comcast required 270 homeowners to pay $2,139 each in up-front construction costs.
Late last year, it became apparent that the town would not reach the 270 subscriber goal, casting doubt on the entire arrangement.
In December, Comcast agreed to accept a contribution from the Chappaquiddick Community Fund in lieu of some of the homeowner contributions. Comcast is waiting on that check to begin the construction process.
The community fund also paid the up-front costs for families who said they couldn’t afford the $2,139 payment.
Lionel Spiro, a Chappaquiddick resident who led the fundraising effort, could not be reached at press time Thursday.
Today, Verizon high speed internet or DSL only reaches some homes on Chappaquiddick, Mr. Becker said. Others have relied on Chappy WISP, another internet provider.
“Chappy WISP has been serving a lot of people very well, but a lot of people want a higher speed and a cheaper rate than he has been able to provide,” Mr. Becker said.
That’s the promise of the Comcast contract.
And though their work may be done on this front, Chappaquiddick still has another technology problem to solve: poor cell phone reception.

If Comcast put 'hot spots' on
deshandra brown mvIf Comcast put 'hot spots' on their cable infrastructure, then it would allow their subscribers to log on with smart phones without using their data plans. Cablevision/optimum online does it in the NY/NJ/CT metro area with hundreds of thousand of these. I don't know why Comcast does not. Not sure if a smart phone logged on to a wireless hotspot would have better service to make phone calls but at least your texting and web surfing would be improved.
Just a clarification on Mr.
Bob Fynbo Chappy WISP, mvWiFi, llcJust a clarification on Mr. Becker's comments. Chappy WISP provides free installation and Internet service to any household on Chappy with school aged children (whether in an island school or home schooled) along with many locations that have free access to the public. Also, our price schedule is identical to what Comcast is offering, with speeds available higher than anything Comcast offers. Not that the island papers have ever verified anything they printed regarding my company. A side note; we've been offering service for 5 years without a $2000+ install or tax payer money as is part of the Comcast deal.
I don't understand why anyone
Junkyard Jimmy ChappyI don't understand why anyone would pay over 2k for comcast just to be setup. What a joke!
Outside of my morgage Comcast
Theo MVOutside of my morgage Comcast is the largest monthly bill that I pay. How exactly will those that were bailed out by the Chappy fund pay this bill each month? I always lived by the rule, don't buy what you can't afford. So, if you don't have 2k, you shouldn't take on a 200 per month comcast bill. What happens when those that can't afford end up dropping out? Also, is the community fund privately-owned? Did all those that have contributed and given donations approve this? Or, was this decided by a select few that will benefit from Comcast on Chappy (Chappy Ferry)?
When will Comcast start working on the lines and how will this work impact traffic? How will this impact the wait times for the Chappy ferry?
Seems like a lot is being done to bring services to Chappy that are already existing on the Island. Directv, Wisp, Vwrizon / Vonage, already provide internet, phone, and tv, meanwhile I still can't get a cell signal on the Island.
Wahh wahh wah...is my most
A Guy MVWahh wahh wah...is my most verbally astute comment for those angry that this went through.
It's not about anger, it's
Theo MVIt's not about anger, it's about being on the wrong side of a bad deal. I'd love to see the statics showing what percentage of Comcast customers actually paid for the lines to be setup via an upfront fee. Lets see who's mad in 5 years once the infrastructure is in place and I'm able to get service without dropping 2k, just like everyone else in America.
We have been very pleased
Chappy more than summer resident for 25 years ChappyWe have been very pleased with Chappy WISP. Bob Fynbo took a risk and built a successful business when we had no internet other than Hughesnet dishes. WISP is fast and his service is excellent. I have Comcast in Florida. It is slow and you will wait weeks for service. They are not well loved. It has been painful to watch so many Chappy people become so posessed with getting Comcast. This deal screws the local guy who took a risk in favor of one of the largest and least popular corporations in America. Shame on you folks who have peddled the lies to put Fynbo out of business. It makes no sense at all. We'll keep this in mind whne its time to support your local business ventures.
The island is experiencing
Ken EdgartownThe island is experiencing problems with large conglomerates taking over small companies. First Comcast taking over Adelphia, Nstar was sold last year and are changing their name and raising rates. Little guy dont have a chance. Amerigas bought up vineyard Propane I dont know if they plan to increase rates they were pretty high already. Not much left we are hostage to speculators.
I am a Chappy WISP customer.
chipchap ChappyI am a Chappy WISP customer. The service is cheap as dirt, as fast as lighting and support is excellent. I move large data files, stream movies and run my phone thru this service often with 3 to 4 concurrent users. I don't get the whole Comcast thing.
We'll be sticking with Fynbo
Fynbo4ever ChappyWe'll be sticking with Fynbo through thick and thin on this one. More than a summer resident and we just don't need cable! The wifi is handy, and Bob provides a superb service. It's good enough to stream Netflix too if you need a movie at night! Who needs cable? And for $2k? Sheesh...
Comcast will do well, get
Can't Wait MVComcast will do well, get over it people. It's a great value, all fiber optic speeds. How much does it cost to get around, go to a movie, out to dinner.
