Naming of Freight Ferry on Deck for Boatline Meeting Tuesday

The question of what to name the next member of the Steamship Authority fleet will likely be answered Tuesday morning, when the boatline board of governors meets in Vineyard Haven.

The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street. It is one of two SSA meetings held on the Vineyard each year.

There are four names in the running for a new freight ferry, which is still in the early stages of a complex design and engineering process.

After vetting names submitted by the public and boatline staff, a naming committee submitted a list of four possible names: Island Spirit, Quissett, Vineyard Sound and Woods Hole.

Last week, the boatline port council, a seven-member advisory board made up of representatives from each of the port towns, cut the pool in half, recommending two names to the full board: Quissett and Woods Hole.

Additional suggestions from the public are expected to be heard at the meeting, said SSA general manager Wayne Lamson.

Also on Tuesday, governors will hear an update on the design and engineering process for the freight boat, which is scheduled to go into service in 2016. Following months of discussions about the design and economics of the new boat, the boatline is getting ready to submit the plans to the United States Coast Guard for review and approval.

In other business, the board will discuss the final design for a new parking facility on Thomas B. Landers Road in East Falmouth. The new lot will be ready to accommodate vehicles next summer.

Passenger traffic to and from the Vineyard was up 2.5 per cent in June compared to June 2013. Vehicle traffic was up 1.6 per cent for the same period.

The next SSA meeting on the Vineyard will be Oct. 21.

Why are they asking the people to name this boat when they did not
listen to anyone before,I hope they get an ear full about this!

I think we should name it ISLANDER after our beloved ferry that we all love and miss. Unless we can name another large ferry the same name in the future. Otherwise I vote for Quissett.

Oh that is easy the *U.S.S. B.H.Obama*, because "The Steamship Authority didn't build it"
