A retired Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School teacher was arraigned Friday on charges that he allegedly sexually assaulted a former student.

Wendell Leo Frame Jr., 65, was arraigned on two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older. Bail was set at $500, and Mr. Frame was ordered not to have any contact with the alleged victim or any female younger than 18 and to stay away from all Island schools.

According to an Edgartown police report filed in court, Mr. Frame allegedly invited a female former student who was close to his family over to his home in late June. The former student, now 18, told police that Mr. Frame allegedly touched her inappropriately during two visits to his home, and later texted and called her and visited her at her place of work.

The student’s mother reported the incidents to police on August 28, the police report said, and Mr. Frame was arrested August 29.

Mr. Frame retired from the regional high school, where he taught business, at the end of the last school year.

Attorney Robert Moriarty, who is representing Mr. Frame, declined comment except to say that Mr. Frame is presumed to be innocent.

“We intend to hold the commonwealth to its burden at every stage of the case,” he said.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 11.

I know Leo Frame as a decent man who taught at the Vineyard schools for 20 years. He was always there for my family, was a good listener when we needed him, and was always there for all of the kids at the school. He invented new programs for young brothers, and worked with scholarship in everything he accomplished.

Mr. Frame was a kind and caring teacher, always there to help and NOT hurt his students. I do not believe in these allegations, I don't believe he is capable of these charges. He is always decent and conducts himself in a professional manner. Shame on anyone that accuses him falsely.

Gee, why would you report this alleged offense now? Did it actually take place and/or are you trying to mess up someone's life?

No way has she spoken the truth! She was not a family friend and never invited to their home, why did she go there? I know this is not the truth. Leo Frame is a kind, loving, good person. After 20 years he loses his mind and touches a student of his? In his own home? With his wife there? No way!! She had a vendetta planned, and did what she could to discredit and hurt his reputation! We may never know. I know that it did not happen the way she said. My brother was not there to hurt his students. Believe me!!

Why would a man who has dedicated his mlife to serving young people commit this alleged act? HE WOULDN'T. Why is the innocent accused spread on the front page and not the accuser as well?
Why are we so quick to smear a persons long and positive years of service based upon an accusation? The justice system is quick to condemn. Lets hope the public does due diligence and utilizes a fair and valid analysis before reaching a conclusion.

Mr. Frame single handly saved me from myself he was a father figure to me and still is. He has helped not only mysel but others alike reach their full potential guiding young people to strive for better higher education when they themselves don't believe they can achieve it. He is extremely professional in all aspects of life and loves his wife deeply and truly. Mr.frame is a great man and I know that the truth will surface.

Reading the comments so far shows why so few of these type of incidents are reported in the first place. The accuser becomes the person under attack. I think one could see a plausible scenario where this case wasn't even going to be reported until there was a subsequent sequence of harassment or intimidation through the calls, texting and visitation. Seems like there will be enough of a trail of verifiable evidence to prove this matter one way or another. Why don't we just let the judicial system handle this without all the character assassination.

Thank you XerxesIII, Edgartown, for bringing some balance to these dreadful remarks.
How dare anyone smear this young woman this way without knowing the truth! Were you there? Well, neither was I...but I do know the pain and courage it takes to bring charges such as this, especially when the accuser is a well known figure in the community.
It is no wonder that the statistics show that one in every 3 females is molested in their lifetime, yet the statistics of it being reported are minimal at best.

Unfortunately I have experience...

To continue to provide some balance, the process required to get to an arrangement is not insignificant. This victim would have testified in front of a grand jury and they would have voted on the evidence presented to support the charges against the accused. For those involved let JUSTICE prevail.

These accusations are not within this mans character. He has been a great role model to me, his two successful sons, his grandchildren and many others. He has always been a kind, generous, decent and upstanding human being with high morals and God fearing values. To this day I would trust him, with every God given fiber in my being, with both of my beautiful daughters who are the ages of 13 and 19, with no hesitation or second thought! God and the judicial system will prove his innocence.

If you believe this accusation is false, ask yourself these questions. Why would such a well respected mentor in the community repeatedly call and text message a teen to the point of harassment? Then when he receives no response from the teen, he shows at her place of employment to confront her? If he is so well respected and a wonderful mentor, why did she not respond to him? Also, if he was concerned about her lack of response or well being why did he not contact her parents? As an adult and parent, none of this sits well with me.

In my opinion... thought that everyone was innocent until proven guilty. What is it with these remarks stated without proof and only hear say? Yes, there is freedom of speech but there are comments that beget other comments and seem to be the rantings of people that do not know. Don't take your issues out on a person who has given his life to educating children. Why do people who do not know the true story
continue to add fuel to this fire? That doesn't sit well with me.

I will assume this is in response to what I wrote as you did use my closing words as yours. So, how do you know that I do not know the true story? You don't. You are doing exactly what you are preaching not to. You are judging the situation based on what he did and so am I. I believe that the questions I raise are valid. Then again, maybe it is perfectly acceptable for a person who has given their life to educating and mentoring children to display obsessive behaviors directly towards the student he is educating and mentoring. Perhaps you should further your education.
