Ode to a Politician

I love to work a crowd from top to bottom

and as wide as they make em

as long as you’ve got ’em.

I love to work a crowd

that I can swim across—hand

over hand —

an ocean of hands . . .

of all kinds of colors . . .

and a thousand pairs of eyes

and they wink

as they press away

with a sea of smiles

to make room for me!

“hey-how’re you doin’?”

I love to work a crowd from top to bottom

and as wide as they make em

as long as you’ve got ’em.

I love to work a crowd

that I can swim across—hand

over hand —

an ocean of hands . . .

of all kinds of colors . . .

and a thousand pairs of eyes

and they wink

as they press away

with a sea of smiles

to make room for me!

“hey-how’re you doin’?”

now — I like a crowd that comes with me —

with an impact of a rising sea

and as for recognition —

I love to work a crowd!

I love to work a crowd!

to save me from myself

when I’m the first to go aground.

I love to work a crowd

when I can make the least amount in town

grow into a spirit of loving sounds

and I’ll tell you now, when I work the crowd

I can feel the goodness of American people

spreading all around.
