Traditions Live in Holy Ghost Festival

With the mercury topping 90, Islanders elsewhere complained about the mugginess, but at the weekend’s annual Feast of the Holy Ghost, the prevailing atmosphere was, as ever, the light spirit of generosity.

The two-day celebration honors Queen Isabella of Aragon, who in the 13th century donated her jewels to feed the poor. As it has been for years, tasty Portuguese sopa, a stew of linguica, chorizo, potatoes, kale and cabbage, was available by the bowlful, served for free on Sunday, in honor of the queen’s noble aspiration to feed the less fortunate of her country. The proceeds of the feast events at the Portuguese-American Club benefit the Island community year-round.
